If your radon test results are four picocuries per liter or higher, then you should take action to reduce the radon level in your home. The United States Environmental Protection Agency recommends that you use a certified radon contractor to test and fix your home, because testing for radon and knowing how to lower high radon levels requires specific technical knowledge and special skills.
The Environmental Protection Agency's Radon Contractor Proficiency Program requires contractors to take training courses and pass a proficiency exam. The New York State Health Department's Radon Program can provide a list of certified radon contractors for your information.
Choose a radon contractor just as you would choose someone to do other home repairs. It is wise to get more than one estimate and to ask for references. You should compare the contractors' proposed costs, and consider what you will get for your money. A system which is less expensive to install may have higher long-term operating and maintenance costs.
Once you have chosen a contractor, ask for a contract before any work begins. Carefully consider options which may add to the initial cost of the system, but will protect you in the future. Such options may include a guarantee that the contractor will adjust or modify the system to reach the promised radon level, or an extended warranty or service plan.
