Maintaining Your Radon Mitigation Contractor

FACT SHEET | RADON

Although radon is a problem in one out of every 6 homes in New York State, the good news is that installing a radon reduction system can significantly reduce radon levels in your home.

Most radon reduction systems use fans to divert radon away from the house. Similar to a furnace or chimney, your radon reduction system will need some occasional maintenance. You should look at the warning device on your system regularly to make sure that it is working correctly. Fans in these units may last for five years or more and may then need to be repaired or replaced. Replacing the fan in the radon reduction system will cost around $250, including parts and labor. By testing your home at least every two years, you will confirm that your radon level is remaining low and that your fan is still performing well.

Maintaining Your Radon Reduction System

A heat recovery ventilator may be installed to increase ventilation. The filter in a heat recovery ventilator requires periodic cleaning and should be changed twice a year. Replacement filters for a heat recovery ventilator are easily changed and cost between $5.00 and $15.00. Also, be sure to inspect the vents in your system for leaves and debris so that the flow of fresh air from the outside is not interrupted. The ventilator should be checked annually by a heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning professional to make sure the air flow remains properly balanced. Like a fan, a heat recovery ventilator used for radon control should run constantly.
