The CNY Coalition For Healthy Indoor Air (CNYHIA) has provided the Madison County Habitat for Humanity chapter a grant for building materials they will need to install a passive radon gas reduction system at the Habitat house on Dyke Road in Chittenango currently under construction. Upon completion the family will receive a free radon test-kit from the NYS Department of Health. Cortland County Community Action Agency Inc. Energy Services Department is donating a high-efficiency water heater at no cost as well.
Radon reducing new construction techniques are easily incorporated into building plans for residential buildings at a cost averaging between $350 and $500. Madison County is a high risk county in New York state for elevated radon gas levels. Radioactive radon gas causes over 22,000 lung cancer deaths each year in the United States and is second only to cigarette smoking in causing lung cancer.
The CNY Coalition for Healthy Indoor Air was established in 1997 with the goal of enabling all individuals and families within Central New York communities, regardless of income, education or other limiting resources, to live in a healthy indoor environment by providing public education and collaboration between public and private organizations.
The Coalition’s focus during the past several years has been on educating the public on health risks associated with long-term exposure to radon in residential environments. In addition, the Coalition works to provide radon mitigation to limited resource families whose homes have been found to have elevated radon levels. The CNYHIA looks forward to creating a lasting relationship with Central New York Habitat for Humanity affiliated chapters.
